Mount View High School Blood Drive
On Thursday April 4th, the Student Council arranged to have a blood drive at MVHS. This year a number of students, teachers and staff donated blood. Last year we had such a large turnout that the Red Cross brought in more volunteers to help the process run much smoother. It was a huge success and it was clear our students like to reach out and help others.

Mariah Ross, Selected as Cinderella for the Day
Students from Belfast, Searsport and Mount View High School all applied to be Cinderella for the Day. The Cinderella Project of Maine has been providing free, new and gently used prom dresses to any high school girl in the state. This year Mariah Ross, was selected as this year's Cinderella for the Day. Mariah had to complete an application and write an essay. In her essay she shared about helping others and she always seems to do this with a smile on her face! While overcoming challenges in her life, Mariah did not these challenges stop her. She has been part of basketball, softball, field hockey and Varsity cheerleading. Mariah also gives to her community on many occasions. As winner of the Cinderella for the Day, Mariah will receive a dress, hair and makeup, tanning, corsage and dinner for two! Congratulations Mariah Ross!

Winter Carnival Week Shows Lots of School Spirit
Congratulations to the junior class for winning the team spirit points for Winter Carnival Week. The theme was Disney! Look at all the fun we had!

Exploratory Week Arrives at MVHS
Following our Cyberbullying day, students spent the next four days in expeditionary learning. Over these four days, students took part in two courses from which they had over 40 choices to choose from. Students could take a class on pottery, photography, weight training, yoga, Star Wars, History of Baseball, Hispanic culture, ballroom dancing, careers in animal science, robotics, poetry, book club, art club, outdoor survival and many more. The students spent the week learning in a hands on environment. Some took field trips, others had guest presenters. It was a great week where students were engaged in activities that they might never get to experience. When asking the students what they thought of exploratory week; they had feedback! Through their voice, they have suggested we do more than one week of exploratories, maybe offering it twice a year. Some thought we should do a few days each quarter. Others wanted to take more than two classes! For our first time, it was a great week. The teachers and staff engaged with the students which led to stronger relationships and students eager to attend school! Great job MVHS! Here are some pictures of our week.

Mount View High School Conquers Bullying
On Monday January 14th, the students at MVHS took part in an anti-bullying day with a theme around cyberbullying. In an age where social media consumes our students' lives, we wanted to make sure that students understood just how words can hurt and how students at MVHS could take a part in stopping bullying. This event was lead by a group of students that came to the Principal asking to do something about bullying. The students designed the day where we gathered data on bullying at MVHS, learned about the laws regarding bullying and watched a movie called "Cyberbullying." Students then took part in fun activities all week in advisory to help empower students to speak out against bullying. Students completed a t-shirt design contest which we hope to have made into next years MVHS student t-shirts. We also took part in a door decorating contest. Take a look at some of the doors!

Holiday Spirit Cup Competition
On Friday December 21st, MVHS had a class competition for our spirit cup. Students competed in a fashion show where they wore our favorite ugly sweaters, elf costumes, winter wear, and even Santa showed up to strut his stuff on the MVHS run-way. Students also competed in a dance off and a sing off. Congratulations to the seniors who kept hold of the spirit cup once again! Take a look at the fun below!

MVHS Helps the Community Food Pantry through Mustang Competition
Last week MVHS held a competition that was sponsored by SHARE, a student organization that focuses their work on giving back to the community. This group set up a floor competition between advisories to see which floor could bring in the highest number of canned goods for the Unity Food Pantry. It was a lot of fun and the competition was fierce. Congratulations to the first floor for bringing in the most items! MVHS was close to reaching a 1000 items! We filled Ms. Babin's truck and it was the most food we have ever raised for our local food pantry.

MVHS Welcomes the Court Jesters
Last week the MVHS cheerleaders brought in the Court Jesters for a fundraisers. The Jesters are a group of highly talented former college and professional basketball players. They come to entertain and play basketball against a group of teachers and alumni players in a very entertaining show. That afternoon the Court Jesters performed an assembly for the high school and middle school. At this assembly, they share an important message about the importance of education and the effects of bullying on students. It was very well received by our students!

MVHS Focuses on Post-Secondary Experiences
In October all students focused on post secondary education. While the sophomores and juniors took the PSAT, a test that gives students feedback about what they know and what skills they can improve upon to get ready for post secondary education, the freshmen spent the day at Unity College working on team building skills, learning about college opportunities and getting a tour of the campus. The seniors spent the day at the Hutchinson center focusing on life after high school. They learned about financial literacy, the pitfalls of credit cards, and how to budget.
Mustang Pride is Alive at MVHS
Students recently created bulletin boards that demonstrated school pride. This has been part of our work around the code of cooperation and the feeling we want our students/staff/teachers and community to have at MVHS. Each student also received a Mustang Pride bumper sticker as part of their work! Here are there bulletin boards:

Mount View High School Uses Tools in Learning Process Creating a Student Centered Classroom
As MVHS moves towards a proficiency based system, students and teachers have been using tools in the classroom to help foster student voice within the classroom. Some of these tools are parking lots where students can leave feedback about the days' lessons. Feedback might include positive comments, questions they might have or an aha learning moment. The teacher is then able to use this feedback to modify their lessons based on the needs of those students. Another tool that many teachers are using are SOP's which stands for standard operating procedures. These are designed when a procedure is needed. It might be for how to get help in the classroom, how to work in a group, how to sign out of the classroom, etc.

Mount View Works on Code of Cooperation
The first weeks of school have been busy working with students on our code of cooperation. This document is staff and student developed. Both were asked: what do we want our school to feel like? look like? and sound like? Students did an excellent job creating five categories in which a rubric has been developed. This week our students provided feedback on our code of cooperation and the rubric is almost completed where students will score how we are doing as a school and how we are doing individually to meet our code of cooperation. The five categories are:
1. Positive School Attitude and Behavior
2. Responsible and Respectful
3. Involves self in school and community activities
4. Demonstrates behaviors that leads to a safe and caring environment
5. Engages in Learning through Voice and Choice
We will be charting our progress in the lobby of Mount View High School on a scale of 1-4. Come check out our work!
