SPICE Adult Education Instructor

The RSU #3 Adult Education Program is seeking candidates for an anticipated full-time instructor
opportunity starting in September 2013 through June 30, 2014 in the Students & Parents In
Cooperative Education (SPICE) Family Literacy Program. The successful candidate will work 35
hours per week, and must be an Adult Education certified instructor. The candidate must have
strong interpersonal skills and must be willing to meet students in the home environment.
The successful candidate must be able to do the following:
 Recruit, contact, and screen participants through the SPICE intake process.
 Oversee the development and completion of the SAGE and Individual Learning Plan for each
adult student in SPICE.
 Coordinate and refer services for assigned students.
 Conduct individual and small group classes for students.
 Meet/contact students weekly – virtually or in person. Meet with SPICE team, as required.
 Distribute brochures, post flyers, represent SPICE in the district.
 Attend courses, seminars, webinars, and workshops, as required.
 Add columns, news items and help edit and distribute Adult Education and SPICE
newsletter, as required.
 Create and submit quarterly press releases about achievements, updates in the SPICE
Program.
 Report student activity in virtual world to appropriate parties, as required. Offer
suggestions/feedback about what is being created/tested/used in virtual world. Successful
candidate will spend at least 2.5 hours per week “in world” for office hours - meeting with
students and maintaining a presence in the center.
 Upload/create a class through the Moodle Platform to use as a classroom for the students in
the Virtual World.

BARBARA BUSH FOUNDATION ANNOUNCES CONTINUED SUPPORT FOR FAMILY LITERACY EFFORTS IN MAINE

 

~ First Family Literacy Scholarships Announced to Benefit Maine Students ~

 

Biddeford, ME– Former First Lady Barbara Bush announced today awards totaling $310,000 to 14 communities in Maine to support her passion for parents and children reading and learning together. The grants are awarded through the Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy which funds local programs focused on reading, writing and language   comprehension.

 

“The ability to read, write and comprehend empowers people to create brighter and more prosperous futures for         themselves, their families and their communities,” said Mrs. Bush. “The Foundation thinks it is important this year in hard times to volunteer more, give more money, and use our resources to support family literacy programs.”

 

The grantees were honored at a ceremony held at the George and Barbara Bush Center at the University of New England in Biddeford, Maine. Representatives from each program accepted their grant awards from Mrs. Bush and Doro Bush Koch, co-chair of the Barbara Bush Foundation. They were joined by U.S. Senator Susan Collins, First Lady Ann LePage and Danielle Ripich, President of the University of New England.

 

Applications were submitted by libraries, adult education programs, and public schools across the state-seven family    literacy programs were selected to receive $25,000 each. An additional two planning grants ($5,000 each) will help      communities develop the partnerships and resources needed to implement a new family literacy program.

 

Five “Lighthouse Model Programs” ($25,000 each) have also been awarded to well-established, model family literacy programs with significant outreach activities to support the promotion and expansion of services in the state. Awardees are selected based on their ability to demonstrate experience and success in providing family literacy programming, the    creativity of their outreach activities, and the diversity of their partnerships and target audiences.
